Tour Overview

If you're seeking a quieter path to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Rongai Route is an excellent choice. Often regarded as one of the easiest and most scenic routes, Rongai offers a steady and manageable climb with one of the highest summit success rates on the mountain.

This route begins on Kilimanjaro’s remote northern side, just beneath the Tanzanian-Kenyan border. Because of its location, it receives less foot traffic than the southern routes, giving climbers a sense of solitude and a more off-the-beaten-path experience. Along the way, trekkers pass through varied landscapes from open heathlands and alpine desert to lush forest each offering unique views and fewer crowds. A key highlight of the Rongai Route is that it descends via the Marangu Route on the southern side. This allows climbers to enjoy a full cross-section of Kilimanjaro’s ecosystems and scenic diversity, essentially seeing two sides of the mountain in one journey.

Reaching the Rongai trailhead typically involves a 3-hour drive from Moshi. The journey passes through small farming communities and rolling hills filled with banana and coffee plantations. Before arriving at the starting point, climbers register and acquire permits at the Kilimanjaro National Park gate in Marangu. For travelers coming from Kenya, the Rongai Route can also be accessed through Amboseli National Park. The drive to the starting point from the park takes about two hours, including time for immigration procedures at the border.

Quiet, beautiful, and highly rewarding, the Rongai Route is perfect for adventurers who prefer a serene climb, spectacular views, and a high likelihood of reaching the summit.

Your adventure begins after breakfast at your hotel. You’ll drive for about 3–4 hours to the Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border. After completing registration formalities, you'll begin your trek through cultivated fields and pine forest. This area is often home to colobus monkeys, antelope, and abundant birdlife. Hiking Time: 4–5 hours | Habitat: Montane Forest

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp (3,450m)

Today you’ll hike through open moorland with wide views of Kibo’s cone and the Eastern Ice Fields. The landscape opens up with heathers, giant lobelias, and volcanic rock formations. This section is not overly steep, which helps with acclimatization. By early afternoon, you’ll reach Second Cave Camp, where you’ll enjoy a hot lunch and plenty of time to rest and take in the mountain views.

Overnight: Second Cave Camp
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours | Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Second Cave – Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)

After breakfast, you’ll veer off the main trail toward the more scenic Kikelewa route. Day 4: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m)

Today is a shorter, steeper climb that takes you above 4,000 meters for the first time. You’ll leave behind the grassy valleys and hike into a harsher alpine environment with stunning views. You’ll arrive in time for lunch, and the rest of the day is for rest or short acclimatization hikes.

Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4330m) - Kibo Hut (4700m)

After breakfast the trail leads steady uphill. Once you have reached the mountain ridge, you will have a clear view of the Kibo saddle and your day's destination. The trail continues over the saddle which connects the Mawenzi to the main summit Kibo. Here the landscape changes into an alpine desert, only a few plants can survive in the dry and low oxygen environment. The Kibo Hut is located at the foot of the main peak of the same name, and it is here that you will spend the last night before the ascent to the summit. Tonight is for gathering your strength and sleeping early, as the night will be short and tomorrow will be exhausting.

Day 6 : Kibo Hut (4700m) - Uhuru Peak (5895m) - Horombo Hut (3700m)

At around 11pm it will be time to leave your sleeping bag, and after warming up with a cup of tea or coffee, you will start your ascent of the summit at around midnight. At an even tempo, using the light of your headlamp, the trail leads upwards. After about two hours you will reach the Hans Meyer Cave, the first milestone to the summit. The further climb is increasingly steep, and just before sunrise you will reach the crater rim at Gilman's Point. From here you will walk along the

crater rim, pass the Stella Point ,and after 1-2 hours, reach the Uhuru Peak. You did it and are now on the roof of Africa! But the long descent is still ahead of you. In the warm midday sun the trail leads back to Kibo Hut, where refreshments will be waiting for you. After a short rest, you will continue to your camp for the night, the Horombu Hut. On arrival here, and after further refreshments, you will probably fall quickly into deep but contented sleep.

Day 7: Horombo Hut (3700m) - Marangu Gate (1860m) - Transfer to the hotel

Your last day on Kilimanjaro takes you back through the heath and moorland to the Mandara Hut (2700m), where you will enjoy lunch with views of the rainforest. After your break, you will continue your walk through the tropical rainforest, where you can spot blue monkeys and the black and white colobus monkeys. After a total walking time of 6 hours, you will arrive back to

the entrance of the national park. Here it will be time to say goodbye to your mountain team. After enjoying a shower at the hotel and a little relaxation, your guide will present you with your summit certificate. During a communal drink, you can remember the adventures of the past few days and celebrate your summit success.
