TOUR OVERVIEW

If you're seeking a quieter path to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Rongai Route is an excellent choice. Often regarded as one of the easiest and most scenic routes, Rongai offers a steady and manageable climb with one of the highest summit success rates on the mountain.

This route begins on Kilimanjaro’s remote northern side, just beneath the Tanzanian-Kenyan border. Because of its location, it receives less foot traffic than the southern routes, giving climbers a sense of solitude and a more off-the-beaten-path experience. Along the way, trekkers pass through varied landscapes—from open heathlands and alpine desert to lush forest—each offering unique views and fewer crowds. A key highlight of the Rongai Route is that it descends via the Marangu Route on the southern side. This allows climbers to enjoy a full cross-section of Kilimanjaro’s ecosystems and scenic diversity, essentially seeing two sides of the mountain in one journey.

Reaching the Rongai trailhead typically involves a 3-hour drive from Moshi. The journey passes through small farming communities and rolling hills filled with banana and coffee plantations. Before arriving at the starting point, climbers register and acquire permits at the Kilimanjaro National Park gate in Marangu. For travelers coming from Kenya, the Rongai Route can also be accessed through Amboseli National Park. The drive to the starting point from the park takes about two hours, including time for immigration procedures at the border.

Quiet, beautiful, and highly rewarding, the Rongai Route is perfect for adventurers who prefer a serene climb, spectacular views, and a high likelihood of reaching the summit.

TOUR HIGHLIGHT
  • Less crowded: Offers solitude and peaceful hiking

TOUR PLAN

Day 1: Nalemoru Gate (1,950m) – Simba Camp (2,625m)

After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, you’ll embark on a scenic drive of about 3–4 hours to the remote Rongai Gate (1,950m), located near the Kenyan border. The Rongai Route offers a quieter, unspoiled wilderness experience compared to the southern routes. After registration and a final gear check, you'll meet your mountain crew and begin the adventure with a gentle hike through pine forest and farmland. The trail steadily ascends, offering chances to spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys and a variety of forest birds. You’ll reach Simba Camp in the early afternoon, located in a clearing with beautiful views of the plains below. Dinner is served as the sun sets behind Kilimanjaro’s slopes.

Day 2: Simba Camp – Kikelewa Caves Camp (3,600m)

Today’s trek takes you deeper into the moorland zone. After a hearty breakfast, you'll hike through grassy hills with expanding views of Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped summit. After 2–3 hours, you reach Second Cave (3,450m) for a short rest and acclimatization. The trail then becomes more scenic, skirting around massive lava ridges and heading toward the Kikelewa Valley. The final climb to Kikelewa Caves Camp is steeper, but rewards you with an intimate campsite nestled in a sheltered valley below towering cliffs. Enjoy a warm dinner under the stars, with views stretching across northern Tanzania and southern Kenya.

Day 3: Kikelewa Caves Camp – Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)

You’ll wake up to crisp mountain air and stunning morning light on the landscape. After breakfast, the hike continues with a short but steep ascent through grassy alpine slopes, soon giving way to a dramatic, rocky terrain. As you climb higher, the vegetation thins and the sense of isolation deepens. Your destination is Mawenzi Tarn, a spectacular campsite at the base of the jagged Mawenzi Peak—Kilimanjaro’s second highest summit. The afternoon is free for acclimatization; you can take a short hike to higher ground or simply relax and soak in the alpine atmosphere. This is one of the most beautiful campsites on the mountain.

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn – Cross the Saddle – Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Today you’ll cross the Saddle, a wide, arid plain between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, resembling a lunar desert. The hike is gradual but mentally demanding due to the elevation and dry landscape. You’ll reach Kibo Hut in the early afternoon, where the environment becomes stark and barren—preparing you for the summit night. After an early dinner, you'll get briefed for the summit push and then try to rest. A few hours of sleep will be crucial before you rise for your final ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Day 5: Midnight Summit Push – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Descend to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Around midnight, you’ll begin your summit attempt in the darkness under a blanket of stars. The route ascends gradually but steadily through switchbacks of scree and volcanic rock. After 5–6 hours, you’ll reach Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim—your first glimpse of dawn breaking over Africa. With determination and encouragement, you’ll continue for another 1–2 hours along the crater edge to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point on the continent. After celebrating this incredible achievement with photos and a few deep breaths of thin air, you’ll begin your descent. Retrace your steps to Kibo Hut for a short rest and hot meal, then continue down to Horombo Hut, where the air is thick and the vegetation returns. You’ll be tired but elated—congratulations, you’ve summited Kilimanjaro!

Day 6 : Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate (1,880m) – Return to Moshi/Arusha

Your final day begins with a leisurely breakfast and gratitude toward your mountain crew. The descent takes you through heather and moorland, and then back into the lush rainforest zone. Listen for birdsong and keep an eye out for blue monkeys as you make your way to Marangu Gate, where you’ll sign out and receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate. After farewells, a vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved shower and celebration dinner.
